A good source of information for starting up any kind of small business is the U.S. small business administration website at http://www.sba.gov. There is a ’startup kit’ that provides a lot of information – you might have to tweak it a bit for your specific project, but much of the information will be relevant.

There are different levels of help that we need throughout the duration of our lives. It is important that we ask for help when we need it, no matter the situation. assisted living facilities offer help to those who can still live normally, but need help with tasks that involve strenuous activity. There are buildings like senior apartments that focus around making the lives of the elderly as easy as possible as we transition into the next stage of the rest our lives. These days are meant to be lived free of the burdens we’ve carried throughout our lives, and why we must ask for help so we can enjoy the time that we have.

Assisted living facilities maintain a belief that you are not unable, but have lost certain abilities that come with the resonance of becoming older. Where physical power becomes dormant, our mental abilities strengthen and thusly, the wise are befall us when ripe, while the bliss remain young. No assisted living facility is the same and they are built cater to different types of people. Where some may lack physical strength for activities, others may lack the emotional strength for certain activities. We live in two worlds: the physical and the mental. Assisted living facilities are centered on the belief that these two worlds should be lived as easily as possible when becoming older because of the effort and stress that we put on ourselves early in our lives. The statistics are showing that the U.S. is one of the most overworked countries in the world; we deserve to be comfortable as our time comes to pass.

Senior apartments are a different entity but provide the same basic purpose of an assisted living facility. The difference being that a senior apartment is designed around helping yourself with the tools you need to make your life easier, rather than having someone else help you with it. Houses need annual maintenance that some may not be able to handle anymore as old age comes. Senior apartments are not maintained by you, and relieve a lot of the stress that may come with owning a home at an older age. We owe it to ourselves to be comfortable when in the earlier years of our lives; we push ourselves to become that best that we can be.

The idea of relying on others can be troubling because we may become embarrassed when we are no longer able to do what we could do previously. These facilities exist so that you do not need to be embarrassed. The people in these facilities enjoy working with the elderly to make their lives comfortable. The connections that we can make while being around those we can relate to are just as important as taking the physical stress off of ourselves as our efforts are moved to our wisdom rather than our brawn. Becoming old does not need to be a lone road. There are plenty of other people out there that still want to share and connect and you can find these connections in assisted living facilities and senior apartments.

I am not living in such a facility but I am a social worker who visits people who do. That is my full time job, I am in and out of dozens of assisted livings. i do not work for an assisted living or nursing home. email me if i can help from my perspective.

Several years ago, my sister and I were faced with the reality of searching for an Alzheimer’s care home for our father. For a number of years we had watched our dad become more forgetful and felt this was just old age creeping in. It first started with him losing his train of thought in mid sentence and forgetting close friends names to then neglecting to take care of his personal hygiene and house work. Dad had lived alone since our mother passed away and had done very well on his own for several years. He was very independent, drove to the store regularly, and in general, took very good care of himself. I guess deep down, my sis and I knew that the day was going to come to find what (at the time) we only knew as a nursing home.

After we received a call from the Pasadena police department informing us that dad was found wandering around 5 miles away from home we knew that the time had come to face reality. At first we looked into more affordable residential care and hired a lady to “come in” for 10 hours a day to look after dad, then put him to bed and return the next day. That went pretty well for about a year or so but then came another call from the police at 3 AM and we then had to pay for 24 hour home care. We avoided contacting nursing homes because of cost as we thought home care would be more affordable, which it was, but not by much.

After realizing that dad had digressed from being forgetful, to slight dementia, to then being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, we started searching for the proper type of care. At the time we really didn’t know the difference between senior living, assisted living, a nursing home, retirement community or Alzheimer’s care but we began to research various locations in our home town and discovered the differences and actually found a number of Alzheimer’s care facilities that we could afford. They were bright, cheerful and clean and not at all depressing. After years of putting this hard decision off because of our misconceptions of affordable Alzheimer’s care, we were finally able to relax and not worry about our father.

Looking at the affordability of Alzheimer’s care, there was quite a bit of research involved. When we began to look at dad’s monthly bills and expenses, one of the facilities we researched was actually less expensive per month than dad’s normal living expenses were when he was living at home. We chose another facility because it was closer to home. One of the research websites we discovered was Senior Living Mentor. I believe we liked it because it was simple, easy to navigate and gave us access to thousands of facilities nationwide.
